As much as the Epic Games Store has evolved a lot during 2020, we cannot deny that Steam is still the most important game store in the world. Well, due to this condition of superiority, the numbers registered by the platform end up functioning as a report that presents the general panorama of gambling by the players of the PCs.
In that case, I would like to draw your attention to a series of lists released by Valve in recent days. In the documents, the company tried to list the most successful games, in terms of sales and popularity, of the year 2020… shall we take a look?
Steam’s best-selling games
As always, Valve released the list of Steam’s best-selling games. In this year of 2020, the numbers were very interesting, due to the pandemic, and we were able to verify the birth of some phenomena. It is worth noting that the list considers the total sales of a title, that is, in addition to the “base game”, the numbers also include sales of DLCs and “in-game” transactions. Check out:
- Among Us
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Destiny 2
- Doom Eternal
- Dota 2
- Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Monster Hunter: World
- Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
Although Among Us was one of the phenomena this year, finding the game in the first place is still surprising. After all, we are talking about a title whose price is much lower than that of the competitors. In other words, the game sold an unthinkable amount of copies.
The best releases from Steam
Along with the list of best-selling games, Valve has also released a relationship with the most successful releases. In this case, only the games that debuted in the store in 2020 and the results obtained within a period of two weeks after the debut are considered. Follow:
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Borderlands 3
- Command & Conquer Remastered Collection
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Crusader Kings III
- Death Stranding
- Doom Eternal
- Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
- Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout
- FIFA 21
- Football Manager 2021
- Grounded
- Half-Life: Alyx
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Mafia: Definitive Edition
- Marvel’s Avengers
- Microsoft Flight Simulator
- Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord
- Persona 4 Golden
- Resident Evil 3
- Sea Of Thieves
- Star Wars: Squadrons
- Have got has got
- The Outer Worlds
- Wolcen: Lords of Mayhem
As it could not be otherwise, the presence of Borderlands 3 (in the second position) is the highlight of this selection, as the game was released in 2019, as a temporary exclusive of the Epic Games Store and that did not stop it from making a huge success in Steam, even debuting the following year.
Steam’s best-selling VR games
As with the list of the best-selling games, this list considered the total results obtained by the titles (sales + DLCs + in-game transactions). Of course, the difference was the exclusive focus on titles that make use of virtual reality gadgets. Take a look:
- Arizona Sunshine
- Beat Saber
- Blade & Sorcery
- Boneworks
- Half-Life: Alyx
- Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades
- Pavlov VR
- Pistol Whip
- Superhot VR
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR
- The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners
- VR Kanojo
In the case of this list, what stands out is the presence of Half-Life: Alyx “only” in the fifth position. The title was one of the big winners of the year, in the categories related to the VR segment, but, in terms of sales, it was beaten by other games.
The best selling games from Early Access
Steam’s Early Access scheme is responsible for helping developers raise funds for their games, by offering games that are not yet ready. This modality is very well used by indie studios and, in 2020, some great successes left the regime. And yes, these are the successes that are on the list below:
- Conqueror’s Blade
- Deep Rock Galactic
- Golf With Your Friends
- DJMax Respect V
- Factor
- Hades
- Night
- Risk Of Rain 2
- Skater XL
- Squad
- Torchlight III
- Wolcen: Lords Of Mayhem
In the list presented above, the total number of titles (sales + DLCs + in-game transactions) were also considered. So we have a very interesting summary of how the “indie world” has behaved throughout the year.
Most Played Games
Finally, we have here a list that is related to the number of players dedicated to adventures and not to the results, in terms of sales. Yeah! Here we have a selection with games that surpassed the mark of 200 thousand simultaneous players and registered incredible numbers throughout the year:
- Among Us
- Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
- Cyberpunk 2077
- Destiny 2
- Dota 2
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Life Is Strange 2
- Monster Hunter: World
- Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord
- Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds
- Terraria
Among Us was the big winner and his achievement should be praised, since overcoming the legendary CS: GO is not an easy thing, especially within the “terrain of Valve”. Still, the biggest surprise was Life Is Strange 2, which is a single player experience and managed to reach seventh place.
A nice summary of the “gamer year” on PCs
As you can see, Valve’s lists gave us a good idea of how the PC game world worked in 2020. Among Us was really the phenomenon of the year and other classic games like CS: GO and Dota 2 showed that they are still operating at “Full steam”
And the cool thing is that these lists are all based on numbers, that is, there is no more accurate summary of gambling on PCs than this one. Anyway, what we have left now is to hope that 2021 is as rich in big games as 2020 was. To the next…
