Given the level of contagion, it was only a matter of time before the new variant of SARS-COV-2 arrived in mainland Portugal. The new variant of the disease COVID-19, which already circulates in Madeira, from the United Kingdom, now has 16 cases registered in mainland Portugal.
The information is contained in a letter from the Ricardo Jorge Institute that has already been sent to the Government.
New variant of the COVID-19 virus already circulating in mainland Portugal…
The information was advanced by RTP and confirmed by TVI24. According to revelations by experts, the new strain of COVID-19 is 70% more contagious. According to a statement to which TVI had access when it was detected in the United Kingdom, the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge stated that the new variant had been detected in travelers who arrived in Madeira from the United Kingdom.
This identification was only possible thanks to the work developed by the Screening Center of Madeira International Airport, which allows to track, identify and forward positive cases to isolation, when detected
The statement also said that the region would continue to monitor the arrival of passengers, in compliance with the guidelines of the Directorate-General for Health, "thus reducing the risk of contagion by the new coronavirus in the region".
Regarding the 16 cases in Mainland Portugal of the new virus variant, little is known.
