With the recent launch of its new consoles, and still maintaining Xbox One sales and services, Microsoft has started operations to discontinue the Halo series on its Xbox 360. The manufacturer’s second generation console will no longer support its jewel. crown from December 18, 2021.
In the statement, 343 Industries, the studio responsible for the universe, points out that all their attention is on the future of the series, including maintaining the Master Chief Collection in its migration to the PC, which has been done in recent years, as well as the next chapter, Halo Infinite, which will be released at the end of 2021. “We have been doing gymnastics so far to keep the services of the Halo Legacy versions, and keeping everything functional today requires a considerable amount of resources and time, which have an impact on future projects, like Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo Infinite ”, says the company.
The studio points out that as games age, and being replaced by improved versions on the latest platforms, fewer and fewer players are looking for and investing time in old console titles. Digital sales have been declining and the supply of physical versions has ceased to exist since 2018. “Maintaining support for the Xbox 360 version of Halo games is time and energy that we are not investing in the future of Halo”, and thus 343 Industries drew up a road map to end services, with a date set for December 18, 2021.
The first phase was to encourage the unique migration of fans who had the games in the series to the latest Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which took place at the end of 2019. The second phase is the current one, with notification to fans, with one year prior to the completion of services in December 2021. At the same time, digital versions of the games are no longer available on the online store. However, players can access the DLC content of the games they have in their accounts at no cost.
From 2021, during the third phase, players will continue to be informed that the series will be discontinued, until the date set for December. And what games are affected? Halo: Reach, Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo ODST, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Spartan Assault and Halo Wars.
It should be noted that The Master Chief Collection is available free of charge to Game Pass service subscribers on Xbox and PC consoles.
