The latest study by consultancy IDC shows that video games generated more revenue during the confinement and pandemic period than global cinema and sport in the US and Canada combined. With regard to games specifically, the study highlights the phenomenon of successful Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which sold more than 26 million copies between March 20 and September 30. The community’s enthusiasm for Sony’s and Microsoft’s new-generation consoles, which are still sold out practically worldwide, also helps explain the industry’s revenue.
