The Office of the Minister of State, Economy and Digital Transition released the report for the second and third quarter of the year on the activity of online gambling and betting. The second quarter, which was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, changed the habits of the Portuguese with regard to betting. In the referred period, there was a significant drop in the volume of sports bets at the online quota compared to previous periods. The explanation is related to the suspension of a large number of sports competitions.
On the other hand, there was a significant increase in the volume of bets on online games of chance, due in part to the closure of all casinos until the 1st of June, due to the pandemic.
“In the third quarter of 2020, there was a return of the activity of exploring online gambling and betting to levels and patterns closer to those recorded in periods prior to the pandemic outbreak, seeing, in comparison with the second quarter of this same year, a recovery of the amounts of bets placed on sports betting at odds and a decrease in games of fortune or chance ”, reads the statement.
The third quarter of the year saw a growth of 156.8 thousand new registrations, a recovery from the previous quarter, which was 130.3 thousand new registrations. In turn, it was 27,100 fewer fewer than in the first quarter of the year.
Players aged between 25 and 44 years represent about 62% of the total registered players, while the youngest, between 18 and 24 years old, correspond to 22.5% of the total.
Of the total number of players who placed bets during the third quarter of 2020, 44.7% placed their bets exclusively on sports betting odds, 33.4% played only games of chance and 22% of the players had practice I play in sports betting at odds and in games of fortune or chance. As reported, these data reveal patterns more similar to the periods prior to the pandemic outbreak caused by COVID-19, reversing the pattern observed in the second quarter of 2020 (almost half, 48.7%) played only in games of chance, 34 , 4% exclusively on sports betting at odds and 16.9% placed bets on both categories.
