There seems to be no longer any doubt about Apple’s interest in presenting an autonomous electric car with its brand. As we have already seen, Hyundai is closer to the Cupertino company in this project. However, Apple is doing its market work to have the option of its own platform. According to information, the Cupertino company was at the table of the talks with Canoo, a startup of electric vehicles also Californian.
The electric market may soon have Tim Cook’s company putting its vehicles on the road soon, possibly between two or three years.
Apple will have considered buying the electric car brand Canoo
Apple held meetings with Canoo, a California-based EV startup, in the first half of 2020. The discussion between the two companies ranged from Apple's investment in the startup to the full acquisition.
The startup was founded in late 2017 by a small group of executives who were originally a part of Faraday Future, another startup that was developing an electric.
The information published by The Verge, Canoo's scalable electric skateboard platform attracted Apple. Apparently, Canoo's approach is different from other companies because it integrates most of the electronics, which allows greater flexibility in the interior design.
Another highlight of Canoo's design is the use of steer-by-wire technology that allows greater design flexibility.
The Californian startup was interested in receiving an investment from Apple, but negotiations between them ended up failing. Canoo eventually merged with Hennessy Capital Acquisition Corp IV and has since become a publicly traded company and has raised $ 300 million.
The startup's goal is to make commercial electric vehicles, such as delivery and food vans, using its “skateboard” technology. It also plans to offer an electric van to consumers by subscription.
Apple autonomous electric car
As we have seen, in recent times, much has been said about Apple's efforts to build its own autonomous electric vehicle. Thus, it seems increasingly clear that the company is looking for a partnership with a major automotive brand to create its vehicle.
Apple is reportedly in negotiations with Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz and other vehicle manufacturers with the aim of starting production in 2024. However, another Bloomberg report stated that Apple's autonomous electric vehicle is still in the early stages of development .
